Quays vs Qualio vs MasterControl: an honest comparison
A deep look at strengths, gaps, and total cost of ownership across three popular QMS platforms — written by someone who has implemented all three.
I’ve led QMS implementations at three life sciences companies. Each chose a different platform. Here’s what I learned.
TL;DR
- MasterControl: deep, but slow and expensive. Best if you have a dedicated admin team.
- Qualio: fast time-to-value, focused on biotech startups, but limits emerge at scale.
- Quays: best balance of breadth, modern UX, and integration coverage.
Implementation timeline
Time from kickoff to production go-live for a 200-person manufacturing org:
- MasterControl: 9-14 months
- Qualio: 8-12 weeks
- Quays: 4-8 weeks
Total cost of ownership (3-year)
For 200 named users, including platform, services, and internal admin time:
- MasterControl: $1.4M-$2.1M
- Qualio: $480K-$720K
- Quays: $360K-$540K
Disclosure
I now consult for Quays as a customer advisory board member. The numbers above are public list prices and benchmarks from QMS Insider 2026 report.
